概要 | Teletandem is a growing practice where a proficient speaker of one language is paired with a proficient speaker of another, with the aim of each helping their partner learn their target language using an application such as Skype. When institutions link to set up tandem partnerships, there are various possible modes and levels of control. In the freest mode, it is difficult for coordinators to have a clear image of what happens in the off-campus, ungraded sessions. It can therefore be difficult to effectively promote and support the practice and to build a culture where students engaging in such autonomous tandem practices becomes the norm. This study explores the teletandem experiences of five Japanese undergraduate English majors, who paired with students in the United States and Mexico. The stories illustrate the affordances of this practice both for building confidence and increasing motivation. |
