| 概要 | The white-striped Judo black belt symbolizes the disrespect directed at Japanese women Judo athletes. Foreign female Judo players wear ordinary black belts; however, their Japanese counterparts are compelled to wear black belts with a white stripe. Grading regulations are identical for men and women in other Japanese martial arts such as kendo or karate, and women are awarded ordinary black belts just as men. This paper elucidates the fundamental values of Judo, investigates why Kano Jigoro instituted the white-striped belt for women and probes the historical and social contexts that led to the establishment of women's Judo. |
