概要 This paper focuses on a research project gauging students’ experience in an English for Academic Purposes (EAP) course where they studied perceptions of women in film and the representations of female experiences expressed in various media. A literature review presents the pedagogical rationale, focused on EAP as an avenue of content-based instruction (CBI), as well as illustrates the necessity of promoting critical thought on social issues in the classroom. Fifteen EFL students taking a course on foreign films at a women’s university in Japan explored issues such as plot conventions and directorial decisions. Online surveys were used to ascertain students’ impressions and understanding of the course content. This paper discusses the results of the study and provides insights for similar educational ventures.
