概要 | There is little doubt that English language learners need to learn to read, but there is some controversy as
to when and how this process should begin. In the past reading was not taught until junior high school in Japan, but with the new emphasis on English in public elementary schools, the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) has recommended that elementary school students should also start literacy activities. The aim of this research was to analyze a number of MEXT approved textbooks in order to assess the type of reading activities that are included in these textbooks, and how they correspond with common methods of teaching reading to beginners. This paper will show the results of this analysis and include suggestions as to what activities might be used to supplement these textbooks in order for beginners to be taught in a more comprehensive manner. |
