概要 In his book Outliers (2008) Malcolm Gladwell wrote that it took 10,000 hours to become a specialist at anything. Matthew Syed in his book Bounce (2011) applied this to sport and stated that it would take 10,000 hours of practice in a sport to become an expert. In this paper I would like to apply the 10,000-hour rule to language learning. By demonstrating how few hours of English practice the average Japanese student receives, I would like to offer insight into why the level of English proficiency is so low in Japan. Finally I would like to suggest ways in which teachers can increase the number of hours of English practice in order for their students to gain the practice needed to reach fluency.
