概要 This paper explores cross-cultural links between the botanizing lives of Kan (Kan-ichiro) Yashiroda (1901-1979) and Reginald Farrer (1880-1920). Both travelled to Asia for plant collecting, wrote observations on botanical landscapes, developed innovative forms of gardening and wrote books, especially on rock gardening with wild plants. In 1925 Yashiroda went to study at Kew Gardens, England, and in the two years he stayed undertaking research he established a botanical global network. After returning to Japan, he created and ran a private experimental acclimatization botanical garden in 1928. At the same time, he started a private nursery company, K. Yashiroda Ltd, at Tonosho, Shodo-shima. His commercial nursery exported Asian seeds and rare plants to European and American customers. This paper explores how Yashiroda interpreted and understood Reginald Farrer’s innovative heritage of rock gardens and wildflowers.
