概要 | Although English-language textbook use in primary and secondary education has been the target of academic study, tertiary education is a different case. Part of the reason for this is there is no standard textbook, with universities or individual teachers selecting the texts they use in their courses. As part of a larger government funded research project on the place of culture in EFL education, we conducted a preliminary study into textbook selection and usage in Japanese universities. This study has indicated several trends on how textbooks are used in universities that deserve more attention. Most significant for Asian TESOL educators is the omission of local culture in the textbooks used. In this presentation, we discuss the significance of this and our other results. This provides insights to teachers, curriculum planners and school administrators on how to better evaluate EFL textbooks to meet their students’ needs. |
