概要 | When we look at the background of low-achieving EFL students in Japanese universities or colleges, their low expectancy in the classroom seems to be a crucial factor leading to their demotivation. This paper deals with rationales regarding the importance of expectancy, and the relationship between low levels of English and expectancy, and also the relationship between expectancy and motivation. Low-achievers usually have a long history of unpleasant experiences in the classroom before enrolling their universities, and the undesirable impact of their past achievement on their expectancy, as well as on motivation, could be massive. However, considering the rationales of the relationships, we can see a possibility that their motivation can be improved if they have controllable experiences to enable them to believe that they can do class work well when making effort, even with some support.
