概要 This study discusses the characteristics of the Christology in the Gospel according to Matthew, to question the assumption that Christology is the watershed between Judaism and Christianity.
Christology in the New Testament is often considered to be the root, foundation, or essence of Christianity, differentiating it from Judaism. Although it is not necessary for those of Christian faith to change their minds on the role of Christology, from the position of New Testament Studies, especially from the view point which does not see the parting of the ways of Judaism and Christianity to be the premise of the establishment of the New Testament, Christology can be examined in the light of each separate document of the New Testament.
This study shows that certain features of Matthean Christology should be understood relative to contemporary Jewish movements, particularly ‘Binitarian Monotheism.’ This study examines Matthew 28:16–20 and its triadic formula (19b) in particular. Although Matthew 28:16–20 shows the traces of his highly redactional composition, intended to bind up whole the book of the Gospel with the Christological focus on Jesus as υἱός and its triadic formula, which provided the basis for the later Christian doctrine of the Trinity, it can be seen in exegetical analysis that Matthean Christology can still be understood within the notion of ‘Binitarian Monotheism.’
