概要 | The hypothalamic gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) neurons produce the central output regulating reproduction. In clear contrast, the terminal nerve (TN)-GnRH neurons have been suggested to function as a neuromodulatory system that regulates the motivational state of the animal. However, our knowledge about the functions of TN-GnRH neurons is still limited at present. The analysis of the neural inputs to TN-GnRH neurons which alter their pacemaker activity is the key to understanding their functions. Here we examined the GABA(A) receptor-mediated responses in the TN-GnRH neurons of adult teleost fish, the dwarf gourami, by means of gramicidin-perforated and cell-attached patch-clamp recordings. GABA(A) receptor activation depolarized TN-GnRH neurons and had excitatory effect on their electrical activity, which is contrary to most neurons in the adult brain. To elucidate the physiological functions of excitatory GABAergic inputs to TN-GnRH neurons is the next step. |
